Unlocking the Truth about Sixth Grade and Heavy Metal

Although many 11 year-olds are members of fictitious bands who are supposedly on their way of being the next Rolling Stones (or *NSYNC depending on how sophisticated the tastes of the children are), few can actually rock out as hard as sixth graders Malcolm Brickhouse, Jarad Dawkins, and Alec Atkins. Natives to Flatbush, Brooklyn, the three members of Unlocking the Truth are beyond their years not only when it comes to their technical skill, but also in terms of their lyrics. Some of their songs deal with mature matters such as relationships, which even they acknowledge, may seem a bit “grown-up.”

Saying that these young musicians are undiscovered would be a lie: they have played in very grown-up venues such as the Apollo Theater, and have been featured in mainstream music outlets such as FuseTVThe Village Voice, and Vice’s NoiseyHowever, while their music credentials are undoubtedly impressive, their self-assured words of wisdom are perhaps the most strikingly mature of all: “Just be yourself, and do what you do best.”
