Ethiopian musician and demigod, Teddy Afro releases his latest music video- ‘Tikur Sew’ (meaning Black Person in Amharic). To say that it’s anything less than epic would be a misnomer. Shot on location in Addis Ababa, with 420 actors, the hollywood blockbuster trailer-esque 9+ mins film is based on the Battle of Adwa. In 1896, Emperor Menelik II & Empress Taytu Betul beat back the Italians, ensuring that Ethiopia would remain a sovereign nation, the only African nation to never be colonialised.
Calling on an old African proverb, “Until the lion learns to speak, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” Well, ladies and gentlemen- looks like the Lion has started to speak.
The film’s director, Tamirat Mekonen, shared his thoughts on the making of the film and how he got his start in film withTadias Magazine. Oh, and by the way- he mentions it’s his first project since graduating from film school…. Nothing like setting the standard from the get go!
