This summer in Gothenburg the Clandestino Festival (8th of June 2013) presents a massive rhythmic soundclash where German techno meets Senegalese Mbalax drumming.
Mark Ernestus is a dub techno guru and one half of the legendary Berlin duo/record label Basic Channel. On a trip to Senegal he thought he was looking for records to sample, but instead ended up in a recording studio together with some twenty of Senegal’s best musicians: A group of sabar drummers from Kaolack, led by Bakane Seck, the singer Mbene Diatta Seck, and several guest musicians and vocalists – some of which are from Youssou N’Dour’s group. All resulting into a heavy and dirty, ancient and futuristic Mbalax, stripped down, and sometimes even deconstructed into dub-versions. The collaboration is available on disc through Honest Jon’s, but a musical fusion as explosive as this one should really be experienced live with a big band, dancers and Ernestus performing live dub mixing.
