“I’m Ghana’s best female singer”, is the first thing Efya told me when I met at her at a night club in Accra.
And well, she actually is. Not just because she won the Best female artist trophy at this spring’s Ghana Music Awards or because she has more star quality and swagger than most. No, this is a female trumpet we’re talking about here.
Just notice the way she outsings Nigerian soul singer Dipo in the video below, while they’re rehearsing a song. Which is kind of beautiful since Ghana culturally is an underdog in the region compared to Nigeria (the second biggest influence on Ghanaian hiplife after Tupac and Lil Wayne).
